Out and About - Charleston

Pictures from a recent trip to visit Charleston in East Sussex. The house was the home of the Bloomsbury Group - a circle of artists, writers, and thinkers who believed creativity should shape everyday life. Notice all the little details, the confidence of colour, and the lived-in atmosphere of this extraordinary home. These are the kinds of places that continue to inspire how we design today. We get out and about as much as we can - so for more design-focused visits, follow us on instagram.

In the dining room, pattern and colour are used on multiple planes to create visual interest.

The house itself became a living canvas where any and every paintable surface was used.

The Bloomsbury Group filled the garden with flowers and plants that they loved to paint.

Colours are layered on this fire surround, giving it a depth of tone.

Many colours are used throughout the house, yet it maintains a cohesive feel because of the carefully considered palatte and the thought given to the light in each room according to the orientation.

The large garden behind the house was an important source of inspiration to its artist residents.

The painted design on this tabletop echoes the greenery outside of the window.
