International Womens' Day

On International Women's Day this year I thought about the enormous contribution so many incredible women have made to the interior design industry, and I was reminded of an exhibition I really enjoyed at The Design Museum a few years back. It was about the life and work of the inspirational French architect and designer Charlotte Perriand, a true trailblazer of the 20th Century. She wanted to make good design accessible to all and believed that better design made for better living. In the 1920s she was pioneering open-plan living so that women did not feel so trapped in their domesticity which, even if we can't comprehend, we can certainly be grateful for. She also appears to have had a playful sense of humour.

"Dwellings should be designed not only to satisfy material specifications; they should also create conditions that foster harmonious balance and spiritual freedom in people’s lives."

Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999)

Love it or hate it, she is well known for designing the ski resort Les Arcs, among many other things.

Fiercely independent, a global traveller and passionate skier, she feels like a kindred spirit.
