Looking through the pictures from recent photo shoots, I am reminded of the thought and care that goes in to getting the details right for each client. A good example is a lovely Edwardian house in Clapham where the owners wanted a Modern Classic stamp with interesting and beautiful materials. Here are just a few of those all important details.
Book matched walnut veneer on the doors of a cupboard designed to 'float' above the floor. No standard kitchen handles here - these ceramic ones are both pleasing and tactile.
A curve in the extended oak window sill works as a seat with or without the cushion made in an outdoor fabric for durability. Leave that window open in a rain shower? No drama.
The room at the top is now both guest bedroom and occasional office. Blink and you might miss that the shelf in the bespoke walk-around headboard is lined with cork - a soft surface for a glass. Joinery runs around the perimeter of the room for clothes with hidden shelves for books and paperwork. The inside is painted a contrasting blue, revealed only when you open the bi-fold doors.
In the same room, the walls are papered in a large scale graphic design, which contrary to what you might think, is a great backdrop for art, once reframed.
Scraps of historic wallpapers were kept and framed with a fabric mount as a reminder of what went before. A newly framed poster hangs on the landing - the background 'matches' the wall paint creating the illusion of a print on glass. Clever.
Behind every finished house are many months of meetings, planning, drawings, liaising with architects, contractors and art advisors, site visits, scheming, searching for and selecting material, finishes and finding furniture, lighting and art. A lot of this is unseen by the client but they do see and feel the benefit in the end results. From start to finish we hold the big picture or overall vision in our heads while obsessively focussing on the details. Some ideas stick but some will fall away if they don't excite the owners. Afterall, they need to love the end result. How did these owners feel?
"We definitely wouldn’t have got such a beautiful outcome without you."
You can see images of the rest of the house here. There is plenty more to admire.
